Scottish Shepherd Collie. History: The name "collie" almost certainly comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "col", which means black. This term indicated the Scottish sheep characterized by a dark coat and, consequently, the dogs bred for to their management and care. These were in turn called "Colley dogs" and, only later, "Collie", respectively the long-haired and the short-haired variety. The Collie was generally referred to as the "English sheepdog", causing great confusion with related breeds. It was only in 1863, the year of the first great national show for hunting dogs held in Chelsea, that the two varieties were officially recognized by the English Kennel Club. General Appearance: Dog of great beauty, dignity and perfect overall harmony. In order for it to perform its natural inclination to function as a herd dog, its physical structure must release strength and agility, without any trace of coarseness.
