Scottish Straight. History: The Scottish Straight belongs to the Scottish breed group, together with the Scottish Fold, and differs from the latter only for the peculiarity of the straight ears. This breed originated in Scotland in 1961, when Scottish shepherd William Ross discovered a folded-eared kitten named Susie on his neighbor's farm. Susie's mother had normally shaped ears whereas her father was unknown. Ross adopted a white kitten named Snooks from Susie's litter and started breeding it with local farm cats and British Shorthairs to develop this feline breed. In 1977, British geneticist Oliphant Jackson reported that a third of kittens in the cattery with folded ears developed osteodystrophy, a skeletal lesion. As a result, Scottish breeding in Britain came to an abrupt halt. Even today, this breed is not accepted by the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy of Great Britain. Reputable breeders in the United States have worked hard to eliminate this gene that causes osteodystrophy. General Appearance: Scottish Straights are medium-sized cats characterized by round muzzles and eyes, short necks, whiskers that curve forward, and a round, stocky body with a bushy tail. The body of this cat can be medium or large in size. Chest, shoulders and back are broad and massive. The legs are short and muscular, with thick, round feet. The tail is of medium length and ends in a rounded tip. The dense, soft coat of this breed comes in short or long hair.
